Rutter's Rises As Chain Of The Year

Outstanding leadership, great stores and unsurpassed customer service are the hallmarks of the convenience store industry's exceptional chains. Following these guiding principles, Convenience Store Decisions is proud to announce Rutter's Farm Stores as the 2010 Convenience Store Chain of the Year.

Rutter's, which supplants Nice N Easy Grocery Shoppes as Chain of the Year, is the 21st winner of this prestigious award, considered the gold standard in convenience retailing.

Like Nice N Easy, Rutter's is the second consecutive chain under 100 stores to receive the award, emphasizing that it's not the size of the chain that matters, rather the quality of its offering.

Geographically, the 54-store chain has never strayed far from its York, Pa., roots. Yet, its evolution from small town player to industry leader has impacted the way the industry does business, especially in the areas of foodservice and technology.

?We are still a family-run business so we do things a little more cautiously than some others, but we?re not afraid to take risks,? said Scott Hartman, the third-generation president and CEO of Rutter?s Farm Stores told CSD. ?For us, the emphasis has been on doing things right and meeting the needs of our customers. If we do a good job doing that, expansion will take care of itself.?

Under the leadership of Hartman and venerable industry veterans like Jeff Leedy, senior vice president of marketing for Rutter?s and Jerry Weiner, Rutter?s vice president of foodservice, the company rolled out a c-store prototype that boasts a modern design, open ceilings, extensive use of floor and wall tiles, bathrooms with floating ceilings that cost about $60,000 to design, music and other upscale accents. The design is environmentally friendly, including a white roof to keep the building cooler while reducing energy demand.

The new design also features Rutter?s latest foodservice offerings, including custom stir fry, fajitas and fresh-baked breads.

On the technology side, Rutter's continues to push the envelope with its cutting-edge loyalty program and new mobile applications for the iPhone and the BlackBerry that allow customers to use and scan coupons directly from their mobile devices. ?Consumers are more mobile than ever," Hartman said, "and Rutter?s wants to be right there with them.?

For his part, Hartman has emerged as an industry leader, serving as chairman of the National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS) in 2007, chairman of the Petroleum Convenience Alliance for Technology Standards (PCATS) in 2005, as well as membership on the boards of the Pennsylvania Food Merchants and the Pennsylvania Responsible Tobacco Retail Sales Certification Program.

Rutter's will be feted at an exclusive dinner on Oct. 6 in Atlanta during the NACS Show.

TRUST WELCOMES NEW BOARD MEMBERS WHILE HONOR FOUNDING LEADERS

York, PA, August 10, 2010: On July 18, the York County Heritage Trust honored the founding members of their Board of Directors as part of the Trust?s celebratory 10^th anniversary year while they hosted their 2010 Annual Meeting. During this time, they also appointed Dr. Philip Avillo, Steve Feldmann, Tim Fulton, Delaine Toerper and David Walsh to their Board of Directors.

In honor of their founding leaders, who included Katie Bulette, Fred Callahan, Dr. Gerald Hartdagen, Jim McClure, Dr. Luther Sowers, David Walsh and Jane Zarfoss, one of eight planned, commemorative wooden bench was crafted by the Trust?s Director of Facilities and woodworker, Dennis Kunkle. The benches along with a tributary plaque will be displayed at the Trust?s Agricultural & Industrial Museum.

Keynote speaker Dr. Edward (Ned) Hill, dean of the Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University, is one of the nation's foremost thought leaders on manufacturing and chairs the manufacturing Extension Partnership's National Advisory Board. Dr. Hill is the author of two books, co-editor of five books and author of many articles, book chapters and columns. In 2004, he led the Deloitte Consulting project "Manufacturing Pennsylvania's Future." This landmark study identified opportunities for growth for Pennsylvania manufacturers and proved the importance of investing in this vital economic sector.

Member Data Verification Goes Paperless

In our continuing efforts to save paper and streamline the process, the York County Chamber will no longer send out paper Member Data Verification Forms.

An electronic member Data Verification letter will be emailed to the Main Representative in your business. The letter will contain a Login and Password that allows you to update your membershp information electronically.

You can also manage your business information online. The Main Individual for each member company has been assigned Web Privileges that permits them to change the business information. Other individuals may be assigned these privileges at the request of the Main Individual.

To get started, click on the Member Login link in the upper left corner on the Home Page and log in. Once logged in, click on the Edit Business Information link in the left-hand column. Individuals that have been assigned web privileges may edit their company's information as well as manage the contact list of individuals in that company. Please note: The Business Name and Main Individual cannot be edited online; contact The Chamber for assistance.

Blouse Joins Haller Enterprises as Building Services Specialist

Watch It Being Made in York

Every year thousands of tourists and residents line up to see products being made in York County. It?s a great way to celebrate summer?or any day of the year. According to the York County Convention & Visitors Bureau, few are first-time visitors. ?This is definitely a good sign for area businesses, that they know how to be hospitable and welcoming,? says YCCVB?s Alison Smolinski. ?When you?re doing those things you?re bringing in repeat customers who are telling their friends and customers.?

With over 15 factory tours, most of them free, visitors can watch anything from pretzels to wine or violins being made. At Wolfgang Candy Co. two new robots?named Lucy and Ethel?are part of the tour. Capable of moving 200 pieces per minute, they add to the tour?s attraction. ?It?s a tremendous experience,? says Benjamin McGlaughlin, Wolfgang?s president and CEO, ?because you?re close enough to see everything taking place.? Wolfgang?s tour was recently selected as one of the nation?s Top 10 Best Factory Tours.

Also popular is Harley-Davidson?s tour. ?About 40% of our visitors annually are Harley-Davidson customers,? says Amy Warner, factory tour operations manager. ?For them it?s a very passionate experience to see where their motorcycle is being made.? Warner points out the Harley tour takes you ?right onto the manufacturing floor in the midst of production?.

Believe it or not, you can get even closer than that at Keener Kitchen Mfg. Co. Steve Keener explains, ?We have clients come in when we?re applying special finishes to make sure they get the look they want. Sometimes the client says, ?Hey, that looks like fun, can I try it?? So we let them get in and get their hands dirty.? Customers can help with glazes or with distressing, a technique that creates an aged appearance.

Another up-close experience through Keener is the opportunity to pick your own wood. ?For exotic wood veneers, like teak or bird?s eye maple, we?ll take our customers to the veneer company where they can choose. How much more custom can something get than you picking the tree, so to speak?? Keener asks. Each Made in York tour offers its own attractions. Smolinski observes, ?Whether you?re seeing 40 different grape varieties at Naylor Wine Cellars, petting an alpaca, or tasting a fresh potato chip while it?s still warm, it?s a completely different experience.?

?Kids really love the tours,? she adds. ?The tours also instill a sense of pride in employees. When someone wants to come see what they make, it makes people feel good about what they do every day.?
