Winning With Diversity
The York County Chamber
of Commerce is committed to working with businesses to
achieve greater diversity in the workplace. This ongoing
effort is called Winning With Diversity.
The
objectives of Winning With Diversity are as follows:
- Create
a diversity strategy for the York County Business
Diversity Consortium that focuses on expanding inclusion
in business opportunities, employment, customers, and
suppliers.
- Increase
awareness on the topic of diversity and have Chamber
members include diversity goals within their short and
long-term business plans.
- Understand
and generate a diversity business case for York County
that will leverage and include best practice examples
for recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce in York
County.
- Conduct
Winning With Diversity workshops on a quarterly basis.
(Information and registration regarding these workshops
is available on the online Chamber calendar)
In
addition, Winning With Diversity starts with individuals.
Below are twelve Diversity Resolutions that are endorsed by
the Jewish Community Center to help encourage diversity in
the workplace and at home. For more information visit www.yorkjcc.org.
1. Check my own attitudes and behaviors for bias and prejudice.
2. Think carefully about the words and phrases I use because
they may be degrading or hurtful to other people.
3. Challenge others when they make negative comments or jokes
based on a person’s race, ethnicity, gender, sexual
orientation, ability, religion.
4. Plan meetings, recreational activities, or group gatherings
that ensure people of all races, ethnic background, gender,
sexual orientation, abilities, or religions are welcome to
participate.
5. Treat people fairly and confront my family and friends who
don’t treat others fairly.
6. Avoid using language or repeating statements which reinforce
negative or positive stereotypes.
7. Learn to be aware of subtle forms of prejudice and
discrimination in television programs, advertising, news
broadcasts, musical performances- and protest when a book,
newspaper, television program, or musical performance
reinforces or celebrates prejudice and discrimination.
8. Make a real effort to get to know people who are different
from me. Learn to appreciate the other cultures which are
present in my community and respect their holidays,
celebrations, and events.
9. Do not let a person’s physical characteristics influence
my judgment about his or her competence or ability.
10. Volunteer to work with an organization or program that
actively confronts prejudice in my community.
11. Support stores, companies, and businesses which reject
discriminatory practices and treat all customers with
respect.
12. Continue to educate myself and my communities (school,
workplace, neighborhood, worship) about inclusions and the
eradication of prejudice and discrimination.
